From Delirium

Khalil Pfaff

From Bumpass to Beirut

1- How long have you been blogging?

5 years already!

My current blog, despite the new layout and hosting change, has been up and running since around May 2008. Had a handful of attempts prior but couldn't really get into it. Now I can't seem to stop.

2- How many hours per day do you dedicate to the blog?

In fact, I use my blog as a journal, so it depends on my mood and on what I have to say.

It depends. Recently I've moved off Blogger to something that gives me more (slightly) control over how I want the site to look. That transition has taken a

great deal of time to complete so I've spent more dedicated time this past month than I normally would.

Once the newness of the new site wears off a bit I'll likely resume a routine that has me working on a new post or two each week, no more than 3 hours a week I would imagine.

3- Has it been worth it so far?

Expressing myself on my blog has been the best therapy ever. Because most of my posts are of a personal nature, I see the progress I’ve made on the personal level throughout the years thanks to my blog posts. I also see how I used to feel/react at that specific moment in time and how I’ve grown/evolved in many ways.

So far it has been a pleasant experience. I've had a chance to meet and interact with many new people and the opportunity to share more freely what is on

my mind. I have always enjoyed writing and this gives me an avenue to pass along my thoughts and observations.

4- How many page views does your blog get daily?

Anywhere between 50 and 100+

It varies, at this point not too many. I've spiked around 30 but probably average around half that. I just started using metrics at the end of 2009 so we'll see how this increases (or decreases) as time progresses.

5- How many blogs do you have or write for currently?

Just this one!

I used to be an active contributor on LBF (http://lebanonheartblogs.blogspot.com), but it’s been dead for so long now…

From Bumpass to Beirut is my only blog. I’ve had a

couple articles posted on a friend’s travel blog (travellious.com) but my attention is centered on my site.

6- How many hours do you dedicate to them every day?

I’m too busy to blog every day!! I just blog when I have something to say.

Currently, more than I should. As I said before, I have been in a state of transition and that has required me to spend a lot of time and energy on my site. I think

once things get back to normal I'll be back to a few hours a week.

7- Do you think one needs to post daily to be successful?

I don’t aim to be successful – as I said, my blog is a sort of personal diary. If people like it, then all the better for me J

Not really, I think the path to success depends more on

quality and delivery rather than being legalistic about daily posts.

8- Is there an ideal posting frequency?

Well for me, once-three times/week is good enough I guess.

I think it depends on the site and goals of the blogger. A while back I tried to post weekly, during a time that I didn’t have much to say...it wasn’t pretty. The primary goal of my blog is to share my life and communicate about things that I am involved in with people that are supporting and helping

me here in Lebanon. Anything else I post is generally related to issues I am passionate about: children, Lebanon, tech, etc, but it is all secondary to making sure that I communicate with my friends and family. While most of

the world won’t care I’ve been dealing with bronchitis there are many people in the US that do.

9- What is the biggest blogging mistake you did?

Shutting down my blog for a while. I felt frustrated when I did it, and couldn’t wait to get back to blogging.

Took myself too seriously on occasion and not serious enough at other times. It also took me a while to get used to writing with my own voice and not fall back on trying to emulate someone else.

10- What is the biggest mistake you see in blog designs?

I don’t like the fact that you don’t always get notifications when someone comments after you on some blogs.

Too many ads and sites that are too busy.

11- Twitter is a distraction or a good promotional tool?

Depends on how you use it. It can also be a great help in times of disaster or conflicts, as we saw in Iran or Haiti.

Both. I’ve met some amazing people via twitter and feel

that it has helped me in my move to Lebanon, but I can easily spend too much time playing with it. I first started using twitter to notify people of blog posts and photo updates.

12- Do you think that any professional should have a blog?

Not necessarily – unless you have things to say on a regular basis/updates about your work, a professional website is, well, more “professional”

Properly done I think that a blog can be a great tool for a professional to communicate more intimately with his audience, but I don’t think that it is a must.

13- If you could give an advice for a novice blogger, what would it be?

Just follow your gut feeling, don’t “force” yourself to write on a daily basis if you’ve got nothing to say on that particular day.

Go for it, listen to and develop your own voice. Don’t get overly bogged down by site design.

14- What is the secret of your success, expressed in one word?

Success is too big a word… My blog is way too modest for that!

15- If you could write a post on any blog in the world, which one would you pick?

None :)

I’d like to be witty enough to come up with some captions for unhappyhipsters.com but I think I would just come across as bitter.
