Lebanon News: Under Rug Swept

1- How long have you been blogging?

since winter 2009

I started in 2005 with an on-again, off-again personal blog. It was not until January 2009 when I finally settled down; I chose a topic and took it seriously.

2- How many hours per day do you dedicate to the blog?

Not much, I work full time, I freelance after work... I wish I had 8 hands. I would say 2 hours every two weeks.

I try to give about 2 hours a day – I spend a lot of time on researching articles and running through drafts.

3- Has it been worth it so far?

It really has! It’s great to express yourself and to share your thoughts with others, and at the same time, having them share their thoughts with you.

4- How many page views does your blog get daily?

it varies between 100 and 350

At the moment, I average about 50.

5- How many blogs do you have or write for currently?

Only 1

Just one.

6- How many hours do you dedicate to them every day?

7- Do you think one needs to post daily to be successful?

I think the post should speak to people, and not waist their time.
In my case I always make sure to post witty drawings.
I’m not into posting average, dull things just for the sake of having a post everyday.
But I should try to post on a daily basis.
It’s a question of balance between frequency and quality.

Daily – not necessarily. One though, needs to posts regularly and ‘relevantly’. Don’t post just because you need to.

8- Is there an ideal posting frequency?

I have a problem with frequency.  If there is nice material to post why not daily.

I believe three times a week, evenly spread out does seem to do the trick. Avoid weekends.

9- What is the biggest blogging mistake you did?

I don't know yet.

I don’t believe I’ve made a mistake that could qualify as the biggest, but I’ve done quite a few not so major mistakes. Sometimes, due to time constraints, I end up blogging late into the night, which dents my proofreading capabilities – that is especially embarrassing since I consider spelling and grammar mistakes to be sins against humanity.

10- What is the biggest mistake you see in blog designs?

A blog has to be clear and user friendly. nothing too complicated and have images/ visuals

Getting it right. There are a million factors to weigh when designing your blog especially when you consider whether a design change would help or hinder your blog. However, the ultimate mistake is not putting yourself in the reader’s shoes.

11- Twitter is a distraction or a good promotional tool?

I love twitter; I use it for both promotion and distraction.

Confession: I still have no idea what the whole “hoo-ha” is about Twitter. So for me, it’s definitely a promotional tool.

12- Do you think that any professional should have a blog?

I think that blogging helps readers have more access to your thoughts, personality, and aspirations.
If it helps a professional to be more successful, yes why not!

I think information sharing is key. Any professional with something important to say and feels would interest the general audience should say it. It would be up to the audience to decide if they would want to hear it. Freedom of Speech works both ways.

13- If you could give an advice for a novice blogger, what would it be?

For novice blogger: sometimes you will have tendency to use the web as a diary, nagging space, but should always keep in mind that there are readers out there: have a clear message, be responsible of what you post and be positive. And make sure when someone is reading you, they don't feel they wasted their time.

Persistence – it takes time to develop a blogging routine and it takes even longer to develop a must-read blog.

14- What is the secret of your success, expressed in one word?

Focus – focus your topic, focus your thoughts and focus your time. Though I have yet to reach my definition of ‘success”.

15- If you could write a post on any blog in the world, which one would you pick?

It would be an honor to post on any Lebanon-related blog, but if I had to choose, I think it would be quite fascinating to post on Qifa Nabki (qifanabki.com), * (sietske-in-beiroet.blogspot.com), and Beirut/NTSC (beirutntsc.blogspot.com). Closer to “home”, it would have to be Life in Dubai (dubaithoughts.blogspot.com) and Fake Plastic Souks (fakeplasticsouks.blogspot.com).
