A smuggled lion cub was transferred from downtown Beirut to a sanctuary in South Africa, but endangered animals are easily available.

lioncub.jpg
Lebanon is only one of 18 countries which has not yet joined the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species and lions, tigers, cheetah and chimpanzees are all openly available for the right price. Lions are listed for sale on Lebanese websites for $9,000 to $15,000, and some owners even boast that they will deliver internationally. There is a huge profit as lions are sold for less than $500 in Syria before crossing the border.

"The Government is taking the process of joining CITES seriously, and it has recently moved from the Council of Ministers to the Parliament," said Lana El-Khalil, President of Animals Lebanon. "Parliament now needs to move this up the agenda, ensure that Lebanon joins the Convention and enacts national legislation to be compliant, and actively enforces this legislation."

Animals Lebanon recently rescued another lion cub from a Beirut balcony, and after the two lions were smuggled from Syria in October they will be reunited in the sanctuary.

"We are glad that this lion finally made it to the sanctuary, but for every animal we rescue far more are smuggled in. The government must work quickly to stop these animals coming into the country and ending up as pets or locked in private unregulated zoos," continued El-Khalil.

About Animals Lebanon:

Founded in 2008, Animals Lebanon (www.animalslebanon.org) works to protect animals through legislation, education, campaigns and rescues. As one of the most effective organizations in the Middle East, Animals Lebanon has rescued thousands of animals while closing down unregulated zoos, campaigning against abusive circuses and investigating the smuggling of endangered species.

International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.

2012 International Women's Day

The UN theme for International Women’s Day 2012 is Empower Women – End Hunger and Poverty. In many countries, International Women's Day is an occasion to honor and praise women for their accomplishments.

On the occasion of International Women's Day 2012, the ICRC is calling for more action to help the mothers and wives of people who have gone missing during armed conflict. The vast majority of people who go missing in connection with conflict are men. As well as the anguish of not knowing what has happened to the missing person, many of these women face economic and practical difficulties. The ICRC underlines the duty of parties to a conflict to search for the missing and provide information for the families.

International Women’s Day: Why ‘Rock the Lips?

Logo.jpg

International Women’s Day was inaugurated in 1910, when a German woman named Clara Zetkin proposed that every country devote a day to the needs and political demands of women — which, in those days, included the working rights and the right to vote.

Today, the day raises awareness of gender inequality issues and reminds us of what women have achieved since the first International Women’s Day more than 100 years ago. Rock the Lips, a social media effort launched by marketing agency AKQA, is one of many events this year to mark the annual commemoration.

“Rock the Lips is an awareness effort,” said Kristina Slade, creative director of AKQA, in an e-mail.  “It's a way to spread knowledge that there even IS an International Women's Day, and to support the idea. We felt that a ‘celebrational’ angle would appeal to an untapped segment of women.”

You can celebrate it by applying red lipstick, taking an Instagram photo and submitting it to the Tumblr campaign Rock the Lips.

This is the photo I submitted

And in Lebanon, for this Women's day, Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel is having a special album with motivational quotes from Lebanese women to inspire the future.

This is mine

By shopping this year let's think of others who don't have a family or a warm place to stay, or warm clothes for the winter.

world-aids-day-2010.jpg

World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988.

UNAIDS took the lead on World AIDS Day campaigning from its creation until 2004. From 2004 onwards the World AIDS Campaign’s Global Steering Committee began selecting a theme for World AIDS Day in consultation with civil society, organisations and government agencies involved in the AIDS response.

Themes run for one or two years and are not just specific to World AIDS Day. Campaigning slogans such as ‘Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise’ have been used year round to hold governments accountable for their HIV and AIDS related commitments.

World AIDS Day this year is about “Getting to Zero.” Zero New HIV Infections.
Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS Related Deaths.

Backed by the United Nations the “Getting to Zero” campaign runs until 2015 and builds on last year’s successful World AIDS Day “Light for Rights” initiative encompassing a range of vital issues identified by key affected populations.

How did the red ribbon become so well known?

In the early days, the artists made the ribbons themselves and distributing them around the New York art scene and dropped them off at theatres. Initially there was a text that went with it, to explain why they were being worn, but eventually this was dropped as its symbolism no longer needed an explanation.

Within weeks of the red ribbon idea being born, world-famous actors starting wearing the red ribbon to high-profile award ceremonies such as the Oscars and talking about why it was important. The media also cottoned on, and within a short space of time the red ribbon symbol became universally recognised.

At the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert held at London's Wembley Stadium on Easter Sunday 1992, more than 100,000 red ribbons were distributed among the audience, with performers such as George Michael wearing one. The Red Ribbon continues to be a powerful force in the efforts to increase public awareness of HIV.

Act Aware

This World AIDS Day – and all year round – we're asking you to Act Aware. Acting aware means finding out the facts about HIV and using this knowledge to protect yourself and others from HIV infection.

Many people do not understand how HIV is transmitted, how it can be prevented, or the reality of living with HIV today. People living with HIV can also still face stigma and discrimination from society.

Want to do something about this? Visit HIVaware — a fun, interactive new website which provides all the information everyone should know about HIV.

himaya.jpg

In a country where 1 out of 7 children falls victim to sexual abuse, many find themselves learning about these disturbing figures for the first time. That’s because in Lebanon, such topics are not deemed suitable for discussion.

“We have a lot of subjects that are considered taboo in Lebanon, and as a result, we avoid talking about them because they make us feel uncomfortable. Here, the law stops at the doorstep of every home, where abuse can be prevalent”, says Areej Mahmoud (Creative Director, Leo Burnett Beirut).

Himaya, an organization against child abuse, turned to Leo Burnett to create an awareness campaign that would help break the silence and encourage victims and witnesses to begin reporting the abuse.

“While the message was simple, we knew that awakening the public was not going to be. People need to know that any child, even their own, can be a target of this horrible crime, and not just at home, but also in public places where they should feel safe”, says Nada Abi Saleh (Deputy Managing Director, Leo Burnett Beirut)

The team behind the project at Leo Burnett Beirut decided to take the challenge, employing all forms of media to raise awareness on the topic and pursuing methods that would likely generate public engagement.

The campaign was quick to introduce the notion that Predators can truly be anywhere when it ran a series of TVC’s communicating the hidden dangers surrounding children today. The films, which featured a sinister and camouflaged assailant watching children in places where they should feel secure, paved the way for social media, online videos, and daring outdoor stunts to drive the message even further and eventually call on the public to begin taking action.

“It’s a difficult subject, but it makes you realize that none of us can afford to remain silent. We have to break the silence.” Charbel Sawane (Senior Art Director, Leo Burnett Beirut)

The public response to the campaign made it evident that all mediums used to communicate this unsettling message resonated in the same eye-opening fashion, one that marked the clear intentions of a campaign which succeeded in capturing the grim nature of a subject few dared to speak of until today.

Established designers showed off their tremendous support for this campaign by designing original bra and t-shirt designs within the “Designer Piece”Category that was actualized by the designers themselves and were auctioned during the runway show.
